VMA 2008: Random J's afterthoughts

VMA 2008: AfterthoughtsThe VMA's sucked balls. They always do, so I'm not surprised. I didn't think they could get any more boring than last year's - but lo and behond they were. The BET awards have been shitting on the VMA's lately and THAT is saying something. When the highlight is being touted as Britney opening the awards show, you know shit is up. Once again, the VMA's was all about Britney. She looked great considering where she was at 6 months ago and it's good she's on the road to recovery. But I think it was a slap in the face to the other artists that she was the only artist to be highlighted. No doubt Kanye is gonna cry about it like he did last year. They may as well have just done a f**king tribute to Britney. Because the VMA's was pretty much that.

Britney winning an award for "Piece of me" was a JOKE! They may as well have made it rain moon men on Britney. She did not deserve anything. The only award I would've allowed and agreed with her winning would've been for best Pop album; because Blackout was the shit! But to give her 3 awards for a video that was complete garbage and she couldn't even be bothered to shoot, is a joke. They should've gone one better and given her a video for "Gimme more" and "Break the ice" too. I don't give a f**k what anybody wants to try and tell me: "Piece of me" did NOT deserve Video of the year, Best female video or Best pop video. MTV lost what little credibility they had for that one. Alot of people went mad when Amy Winehouse won Grammy's last year for her Back to black album. Stating that it pretty much awards destructive personal acts. Whilst I kind of agreed with this, Back to black was a stunning body of work which deserved to win some awards and wipe a couple of boards. "Piece of me" on the other hand was garbage. As a single piece of work it was shoddy and shouldn't have won anything.

Russell Brand presented and he was pretty funny, although his UK tailored humour didn't always go down so well. Me living in the UK, I'm all Russell Branded out. He's always on TV and there was a period when he was hosting every single show and also had two of his own TV shows which aired back to back. So I'm not sprung on Russell. But I do like the guy and he did a good job. He was better than that Sarah bitch who presented the VMA's last year. Having Russell do the European MTV awards would've been better though. At least more of the audience and the crowd would gotten his humour and actually have known who he was. Russell Brand is a good character and a stand-up, but he wasn't best suited to the VMA's.

As for the performances - they were jokes. The only performer who fired on all cylinders and actually gave something was Pink. The whole setup from her look, to the song, to her vocals: it was all perfect. If anything, she gave too good for the VMA's. I would've given props to Christina Aguilera, but her miming overshadowed what could've been a stellar performance. Even though Aguilera has nothing to prove at this point in her career, an artist of her calibre should NOT be miming. It would've been okay even if she had sung some parts and mimed others - but she mimed both of the songs she performed. I won't accept the whole "But she was dancing" excuse, because her ass was barely moving when she did "Genie in a bottle" and it wasn't like she was dancing hard to "Keeps getting better". Chicks like Beyoncé thrash their weaves like they're having fits and pussy pop at more RPM's than a washing machine on a spin cycle and still sing live and sound on point. Home girl had a seizure and was rolling around on the floor in heels and a mini skirt at the 2006 BET awards and she still hit every note and sang live. The way I see it, if you're an artist of as high a calibre as Aguilera and you're not going to sing live, then you shouldn't bother performing at all. Even Rihanna managed to sing live and if I expect anybody to mime: it's her. Not good.

The rap performances were good, but they were the same ol' same ol'. I wish at least one rapper would try and put a similar form of theatrics into their performances that Pop and R&B acts put into theirs. Running up and down a stage like an 8 year old high on sugar is played out. It seems these rap dudes are all up for splashing money and getting creative for their music videos - but when it comes to their live performances, they skimp. Kanye West at least tried to come different, but his performance was still too boring for a show which needed more explosive performances. But his new song "Love lockdown" is blazing. I love it! It's a shame his performance was so mundane and the fact the song kills the auto tune may have caused people to turn off. N***a could've at least had a video playing on the screens behind him. Damn.

The VMA's this year was all about Pink for me. She's always been a solid performer, but I love the risks she took with her VMA performance. She shut it all the way DOWN! The Forehead needs to take notes, as does Christina Aguilera and every chick in the game for that matter. Pink's performance looked like a f**king music video! She gave 150% - which is more than the VMA's deserved considering they often ignore her. It's a shame that as a lover of R&B that the R&B and Rap acts did not match up to the Pop acts. Aguilera mimed her shit, but it was still entertaining to watch and was shit loads better than Rihanna's, T.I and Kanye's performances. combined. Pink and The Jonas brothers performances were solid. I'm not even on the Jonas brothers like that - but their performance was a good one. They had me wanting to fling my underwear at the monitor, hit a Zshare link and download "Love bug" with the quickness! They did their thing for the pop sector and definitely represented.

There we have it! Another year, another whack VMA show. This shit ain't gonna get no better unless we have a year where heavyweights: Britney, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Christina and Ciara ALL perform and perform well!

  1. I was really hoping Ciara would perform, and Chris Brown as well. They both always bring the hotness. I still remember Chris Brown's performance from last year. That shit was tight! There was nothing like that this year.

I do agree about Pink performance though. When she slid down the white rope, I knew the shit was tight. Walking by all the exploding barrels was just down right cool. And did you see the titty slip?! LOL! There was tape there, but still.
